EXTENDED ESSAY GUIDELINES - Andy Crown.
The abstract is a 300-word summary of your essay. This should be written after you finish writing essay. First, you should briefly state how you formed the research question and the research question itself. Afterwards, give a short summary of your methodology. Then talk about your results and conclusion to your research question. It's that simple! Make sure to limit the word count to no more.
Abstract, footnotes, references and appendices do not count toward the word count, provided such additions are brief and do not contain information that rightly belongs in the body of the essay Equations are included in the word count and counted as the page equivalent (i.e., as the number of words that would occupy the same amount of space in text) Examiners are recommended to penalise.
An extended essay is a type of academic writing assignment, which success depends on the structure. Except for selecting a topic, researching, and pinning down the main question, it is critical to decide on the structure as an extended paper has to be long.
An abstract for your extended essay has to be no longer than 300 words. It should contain your research question, the scope of the research, as well as a few sentences about the results. The abstract page is always written after the title page on a separate sheet of paper. It is designed to give the reader a vision of what you are going to touch upon in your essay, so make sure to provide.
Length: The maximum permitted length is 3,000 words (excluding the title, abstract, tables, figures, in text citations, legends, reference lists and appendices); essays longer than 3,000 words will be penalised. You MUST display a word count at the end of your essay and misrepresentation of the number of words will be treated as academic.
Word limits and assignment length. Assignment length requirements are usually given in terms of numbers of words. Unless the lecturer tells you that these limits are strict, it is normally acceptable to be 10% above or below this word limit (so, for example, a 2000 word assignment should be between 1800 and 2200 words).
